The festival celebrates the union and lives of Lord Sundareeshwarar and Goddess Meenakshi who are the rulers of the kingdom of Madurai. The festival is connected with numerous art and literature forms. The sthala Purana of Meenakshi Amman temple describes the 64 leelas (divine plays) of Lord Sundareswarara called ‘Tiruvilayadal’ some of which are enacted and narrated during the festival. The festival takes place in the Meenakshi Amman temple along with other mandapams and temples nearby in the city of Madurai.
