Vel Sadhana Essentials

1. What is Vel ? Why do Vel Sadhana?
The Vel is the divine shakti of Lord Murugan gifted by Devi Parvati. The Vel provides complete protection, and enables holistic harmony and wellbeing for Bhaktas.

Vel Sadhana is a time-tested spiritual practice in the Siddha Parampara dedicated to Lord Murugan involving simple mantra chanting, worship and discipline.

The sadhana acts as a protective layer through the Kripa of Subramanya Swami, creating a Rakshana (shielding energy) around the practitioner.

2. Harmony with Other Sadhanas

It does not conflict with existing Upasanas or Guru upadeshas. It can be practiced alongside with other spiritual disciplines without disturbance.

3. Simple Sadhana  and Niyama(discipline) for 48 Days

  • A six-inch brass Vel is given to each practitioner for worship and protection

  • Place the Vel in your puja space. The Vel must be treated with reverence as Lord Muruga himself.

  • Place a lamp before the Vel.

  • Perform Aarti to the Vail before chanting. Offering flowers or abhishekam is optional.

  • Chant 108 Nama Japa daily, continuously for 48 days.

  • Japa must be done after bath, maintaining purity.

  • In case of travel wrap the Vel in a clean cloth and place it in a clean space on reaching. Perform Japa and offer manasika Aarati (mental offering) to the Vel.

4. Bojana Niyamas (Dietary Discipline)

Non-vegetarian food and alcohol are prohibited throughout the 48-day period. Onion, garlic can be avoided.

5. Three Layers of Japa

  • Outward chanting – Vocal repetition of the mantra.

  • Inward chanting with lip-sync – Silent articulation with movement of lips.

  • Fully internalized chant – Silent, deep meditation with continuous mental repetition.

  • This silent, continuous meditation on the mantra is the most powerful. This deep state enhances spiritual energy and protection.

6. Suggested Dakshina?
An amount of 1008 can be offered.

7. How can I deepen the Vel Sadhana? Can my practice contribute to dharma and global wellbeing?
Most certainly yes. Sadhakas who complete the 48 day mandala are welcome to deepen their sadhana by taking up the commitment of a Purascharana which involves significant japa counts offered to Muruga for fostering dharma and enabling global wellbeing. Sadhakas can also take initiation to do homas and are welcome to offer seva to Lord Muruga at Anaadi Foundation, Palani.
